Christian’s story

“I’ve been at ABC my whole life – in fact, ABC was my childhood. My parents worked long hours, and ABC gave me a place where I could be a child… In the summer, we would go on field trips all over the city and go rock climbing. I also loved the ABC holiday parties – we ate together and watched Polar Express, and we got presents. ABC was there for me. Victor, who I look up to so much, would actually come to pick me up at school and bring me to ABC. I know that ABC provided me with opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I was always motivated to succeed in school because I want to repay the enormous trust and love my parents have given me my whole life – I’m graduating in the top five percent of my high school class. I’m excited to start my college journey next year. I’m not quite sure what I will major in yet. I always liked science classes at school, and I value mental health very highly, so I’m thinking potentially psychology. But I’m really excited to explore and learn as much as I can.”

Gio’s story

“My parents worked very hard, so I grew up inside ABC. I went to ABC's holiday parties growing up. One particular year, we all received a Kindle. I remember the room exploding with shouts of happiness. I had never held such an expensive device before because my parents simply could not afford it. Every day after coming back home from ABC, I would take out my Kindle and read a book, which opened up a whole world of possibilities. I loved historical fiction because I like to imagine what I would do if I were living through the characters’ times. I also received tutoring and homework help from ABC’s volunteers, who were there because they understood the power of education. ABC’s various academic support programs helped me do well in school. My mom would cry at awards ceremonies every time I received high honors or awards for my academic achievements.”
