youth services

ABC’s Youth Services offers year-round programming for at-risk young people, giving them the tools they need to stay in school and thrive. As a volunteer, you might provide homework help, teach kids a new skill, or participate in scheduled activities. Click here to read more about program offerings or to contact a site coordinator.

Early childhood

Work with kids ages 0-5 at one of ABC’s five early childhood sites. Volunteer responsibilities include playing with, feeding, holding, and reading to the children. Click here to learn more or to get in touch with a site coordinator.

bunny’s garden

ABC’s community garden is a space that provides children and families with an urban oasis in which to grow their own food, learn about healthy eating habits, and explore nature. Volunteers can help with garden maintenance and upkeep, planting, harvesting, and composting. Capacity for garden events in 2023 may be limited because of staffing constraints.

Volunteer Testimonials

Working at ABC as an intern was a blessing for me! I am very grateful for the summer camp experience with the kids and the staff. After a challenging first year at Harvard coming from Brazil, the kids at Camp Calvin re-energized and inspired me to keep working hard for those who most need it.

This summer, I had the opportunity of running the camp’s application for families, inviting parents for an orientation, and organizing the administrative work necessary for Camp Calvin to occur safely. Besides that, I assisted the younger kids, from teaching them how to play chess to learning how to make slime with them. All of that was only possible because of the supportive and qualified team behind ABC’s Youth Services.

Nowadays, I have the privilege of studying at Harvard with a full ride scholarship for financial need. I hope to see all the kids in East Harlem achieving their dreams through education in the future. I am very glad to have worked in an impactful organization which fosters educational, socio-emotional, moral, and creative growth for children at risk.

I’ve been Yasmine’s study buddy since 2019. Since then, there has been a lot of change in my life and the one constant has been my weekly meetings with Yasmine. This summer, I got the chance to see her in person again – we read, drew, and played Uno. It was so nice to have that time together. Even though I live in Vienna now, everyone knows how special ABC, Study Buddies Connect, and Yasmine are to me because I’ll run home from something at 10pm to get back to read with her.
